Day 18/180: Math, Presidential Hair, Natural Science, and Eritrea

Yesterday, we watched two movies, so I didn't count it as a school day, but I did want to make a note that we did math.  From our math book!  Two chapters, plus some extra problems and manipulatives for reinforcement.  Yay!
Math

Also, yesterday, we visited a music store, and learned about flutes, piccolos, mandolins, lutes, banjos, and more.  And ate Korean/Japanese food.  Culture!
Cutest ukulele ever.

Today was the Academy of Natural Sciences.  I wanted to see the presidential hair before the exhibit closes on Sunday.
George Washington's hair!

John Adam's hair!

An entire book of famous old hair!

We also saw dinosaurs, dioramas, and living creatures

The secrets of taxidermy

We saw a couple of DNC donkeys.

Then ate Eritrean food.  We had planned on seeing Shakespeare in Clark Park, but it rained, so we drove home and played ukuleles instead.  And, of course, read before bed.  And, of course, Jane read three graphic novels (one about the Titanic), and started a chapter book about Queen Elizabeth in the car.

Day 17/180: Girls Who Rocked the World, Spatial Intelligence, Drawing Flowers, Sew Awesome, and Deadly Poison

As soon as Jane got up, she was back to spatial intelligence building with Legos, finishing the habitat and food catapult that came with Merina the Water Dragon.  Then, with breakfast, I found out she had been up late reading Girls Who Rocked the World.

We discussed the chapters she had read, Joan of Arc, Elisabeth Vigee-Le Brun, Coco Chanel, Bessie Smith, Marian Anderson, and The Night Witches.

Then, more spatial intelligence building, and some thank you note writing and addressing

Next, was art, inspired by Lisa Congdon's Draw 500 Fabulous Flowers

We drew two from the book, and some extras.

By me

Then, I found a 31 day flower drawing challenge that I hope Jane will do with me.

Next, after lunch, building with SuperStructs, Sew Awesome at the Norristown Library, and choosing new books.  After supper, Muse magazine, ukulele, Little Women, and the next book in the Hitchhiker series.
Jane is very intrigued by this article in Muse, The Deadliest Poison on Earth (that people inject into their faces)

Day 16/180: Spatial Intelligence, Nature Study, Renaissance Embroidery, Underwater Photography, and Balance

This morning began with construction of yesterday's $17 Lego Elves water dragon.

Then, reading some Monkey King on the way to Evansburg State Park to scope out the area and plan for this fall's nature club.

We hiked down to the stream and explored.  Lots of water pennies, fish, damsel flies, and snails.  Later, we learned from Wikipedia that water pennies are beetle larva.
Snails are plentiful in the Skippack.

Back at home, it was embroidery time, in period costume.

Then some outdoor play and swimming with the neighbors (along with underwater photography).

When she got back, she discovered packages at the door.  Our Harpsicles!  Jane chose pink, I chose purple.  I can't wait until the book and DVD come.

In another package, Jane found Lumberjanes Volume 2!, which she started reading immediately.

The final event of the day was our weekly bike practice picnic.  Her balance coasting downhill is improving.  We practiced skateboards and scooters too.  Then more Lumberjanes on the ride home, and books at bedtime.  Tonight she and her Dad finished The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
