From Wikipedia, we learned that the concept of six basic simple machines came from the Greeks. Today, at camp, they learned specifically about Archimedes, and his screw. Also from Wikipedia, we found a diagram of a Roman sawmill and talked about the gears, levers, wheel and axle, and linkages used.
In the book's section on Roman technology, we read about more gears, aqueducts, and catapults. We talked about how technology was important to the success and expansion of the Roman empire.
Then, at camp, they built a see saw with K'nex to demonstrate a machine with a lever and fulcrum. They also worked on more Latin and ate Roman food.
After camp and a break, pen pal letter writing. The flow is slightly choppy, but she was answering a list of questions from Whitney's previous letter.
While I made super, Jane and her dad followed the troubleshooting guide to repair a talking doll that would no longer talk, and played Chicky Chicky Boom (a game with a lever and fulcrum). It ended in a tie.
At ukulele time, Jane discovered a new favorite song, Vive L'Amour. At bedtime I learned that last night she stayed up reading fairy tales and Murderous Maths, Do You Feel Lucky?
Sounds interesting! I remember going to Mill Creek State Park by the Mackinaw Bridge and watching the gears and levers and water wheel running the various implements in the saw mill there. Pretty cool! Happy learning!
